Dr. Philip Stone - Rosa María Bernal

In this entry, we will talk about a great man who has inspired multiple people including us to enter this world of Dark Tourism and get that need of knowing how, where and why.


Dr. Philip Stone started working as a Management Consultant and General Manager and has gone through a series of works related to commercials in the private sector. He later found out his passion was as a qualified professor in the social science field. Philip has a PhD in Thanatology, which is society’s reactions to and perceptions of mortality. Philip also has a Masters degree with distinction in tourism management.

Actually, Dr. Philip Stone is the executive director of the Institute for Dark Tourism Research. Founded in 2012 and based at the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan).


In 2009, Philip Stone published in collaboration with his colleague Richard Sharpley "The Darker Side of Travel: The Theory and Practice of Dark Tourism" which has had a major repercussion in the Dark Tourism field. Philip is a former Tutor at the University of Cambridge and also is working as an established Media Consultant on dark tourism. Clients include BBC TV and radio, History Television, The New York Times, The New Scientist, The Guardian, and CNN.
